An attitude of gratitude must mark every faithful follower of Christ Jesus.  Anything less than that tarnishes and even undermines our testimony.  We live in a world where greed and covetousness abound as public and personal debt and attitude indicate.  Some business men boast that greed is an essential motive for success.   Such thinking must never characterize the believer in Jesus.  We march to a different drummer and a different code of ethics.  The biblical mandate is: “In EVERYTHING give thanks for this is the will of God concerning you.”

Pastor/poet, Martin Rinkart, 1586-1649, wrote a delightful hymn that became famous in Germany during a time of great tragedy.  The Thirty Years War was devastating parts of Europe.  Waves of deadly pestilence and famine swept the area where he served God.  At one point he was conducting funerals for 40 to 50 persons daily.  The people were impoverished and destitute.  He wrote sixty-six hymns to encourage his people in song and word during that dreadful time.  One became very famous throughout Germany and beyond, entitled, “Now Thank We All our God.”

Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,                                                   Who wondrous things hath done, in whom His world rejoices;                                                      Who from our mothers’ arms hath blessed us on our way                                With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God thru all our life be near us,                                                                 With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;                                                                And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed,                             And free us from all ills in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,                                                            The Son and Him who reigns with them in highest heaven –                                                             The one eternal God whom earth and heaven adore –                                         For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

For all the blessings showered upon us in this good land in which we are privileged to live, things seem to be changing.  Uncertainty, threats, disasters, violence, storms, earthquakes, anger, rebellion, moral collapse seem to be the order of the day.  Are we experiencing the consequences of our sins?  Is God shaking everything so that which cannot be shaken will remain?   It behooves us to watch and pray, and to do it with sincere thanksgiving, lest we enter into temptation.  Our Sovereign God is in control and calling us out of darkness into His marvelous light.  Be thankful, faithful and vigilante.

A fellow pilgrim,  Arnold Reimer
