December 31, 2017

History begins with the creative acts of God Almighty, Lord of the universe.  Nothing here, and none of us, are mere accidents of nature.  A holy God purposed our existence and thus lays claim to us.   Our beginnings were marked by the wholeness and holiness of perfection, the sweetness of communion with God, the beauty of oneness with all other things and the pure simplicity of innocence, order and purpose.  All of that came crashing down when sin entered the garden, contaminating the soul, crippling and cursing destiny.  Welcome to 2018!

Thank God, a door remains open to us to bring hope into chaos!   It starts with the promise of God to Adam and Eve.  From their offspring would come a “seed” to bruise the head of Satan, whose work brought, and brings, such destruction to God’s perfect creation.   His name is Jesus, Son of the living God.   After thousands of years of struggle and failing efforts at correction, into the darkness came Jesus whose life, death and resurrection have made a way to God by providing forgiveness, cleansing and life to all who seek Him and believe.

Unfortunately, much of  humanity, rebellious to the end, continues its struggle to survive.  Like our first parents and their offspring, we insist on trying to save ourselves, in spite of the downward spiral so evident all around us.  Ah, but this phrase, repeated in the Scripture, jumps out giving us hope and direction: “Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord.”  (Genesis 4:26)   The prophets urged, “Call upon Me and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things  . . .”   Jesus repeated it in His own words, “Come to Me all you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

2018 dawns with the world in an unstable, chaotic state.  Governments and people seem to have lost their way.  Spiritually minded people groan at the moral corruption, the political stupidity, the senseless violence and the strange, social indifference that prevails.  It is time for us to call upon the name of the Lord – while it is day, for (surely) the night comes.
